SCHOOL and OUTREACH PROGRAMS

As part of their ongoing commitment to share the art of western folk music, Horse Crazy dedicates a portion of their time to expose students and interested groups to the history of the American West. In school programs, students are led with word and music while participating actively. Our programs are fun for kids! Typically, Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band teaches one small group workshop followed by an all-school assembly involving students from the workshop. Four workshops are offered below: Sing-Along for both Elementary and Secondary students, and Learning to Sing Harmony for Elementary and Secondary grades.

SING-ALONG with Horse Crazy (Elementary Level)

GRADES : 2-5       TIME: 45 minutes to 1 hour (adaptable to school schedule)
SUBJECT AREA FOCUS: General Music and Social Studies

BRIEF SUMMARY: This session is pure kid magic. Students are given songbooks containing 16 wonderful cowboy and folk songs. Everyone is included as they sing along with these timeless songs. A little history and geography are shared along the way. Students are introduced to the guitar, bass guitar, banjo and harmonica, including a brief history of the instruments.

SING-ALONG with Horse Crazy (Secondary Level)

GRADES
: 6-8       TIME: 45 minutes to 1 hour (adaptable to school schedule)
SUBJECT AREA FOCUS: General Music and Social Studies

BRIEF SUMMARY: This session is fun and entertaining for middle school students. Students are given songbooks and asked to sing along with the musicians. Students are engaged and some of the history associated with these traditional Americana and cowboy songs is discussed. Maps are used to enhance the discussions. In addition, students are made aware of the use of familiar melodies adapted by pioneers to create well-known folk melodies. Students will be introduced to the guitar, bass guitar, banjo and harmonica, including a brief history of the instruments.

LEARNING TO SING HARMONY with Horse Crazy (Elementary Level)

GRADES
: 2-5       TIME: 45 minutes to 1 hour (adaptable to school schedule)
SUBJECT AREA FOCUS: General Music and Social Studies

BRIEF SUMMARY: Sing Along with Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band as they pass along a magnificent American vocal music tradition. In the lighthearted humorous manner that has endeared them to students and fans, Lauralee, Emele and Jennifer show the students how to sing favorite cowboy, folk and country songs in beautiful three-part harmony. Students will be introduced to the guitar, bass guitar, banjo and harmonica, including a brief history of the instruments.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES: Students will learn that music and culture are fundamentally linked. Folk stories and songs are universal and have been around for all time. The cowboys and pioneers integrated familiar melodies and adapted the words to their current lives. Students will sing and be involved in the sheer joy of music, while appreciating the continuity of our American culture. Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band will break down their well-honed vocal arrangements of some of the greatest songs of the western genre: Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Home on the Range and Shenandoah. They teach the melody, and then add the tenor/soprano and baritone lines individually. Singing each song several times, and working with the students, they omit each part so students can add harmony along with the group. This enjoyable interactive method will teach the students all the elements of an arrangement and prepare them to carry their own harmonies when they join friends and singing partners.

LEARNING TO SING HARMONY with Horse Crazy (Secondary Level)

GRADES
: 6-8       TIME: 45 minutes to 1 hour (adaptable to school schedule)
SUBJECT AREA FOCUS: General Music and Social Studies

BRIEF SUMMARY: In the lighthearted humorous manner that has endeared them to students and fans, Lauralee, Emele and Jennifer lead students through favorite cowboy and folk songs in beautiful three part harmony. The songs are then studied and students learn the fundamentals of creating harmony. This approach sets the stage for the interactive workshop. The students are made aware of the link between chord structure and harmony choices. As the chords are discussed, the students begin to understand where harmony comes from. Next, the students are given written music so they can see the chords and how harmonies are read and/or invented. The musicians will demonstrate choices and various options, while allowing students to do the same. In addition, students will be introduced to the guitar, bass guitar, banjo and harmonica, including a brief history of the instruments.

FUNDRAISERS

Horse Crazy specializes in hosting "Dinner and a Show." These are evenings designed for a group wanting to create an event which both raises funds and brings a group together. We begin the night with a "teaser" - a few songs to get everyone in the mood while the group mingles. During dinner, the group may use their considerable comic skills to entice audience members to tell stories, or simply visit with audience members. After dinner, there is normally a short intermission while dessert is served, and then the audience is ready for a performance sure to become a favorite memory for your group. Our fee is based upon Per Plate, with a minimum number of guests. Call or for more information. We can help with promotional materials and we will assist you every step of the way.
