History of Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band...
if you ever wanted to know how we got here.
Horse Crazy began in 1999 with Virginia Bennett, Lauralee Northcott and Emele Clothier. Virginia was already an award winning Cowboy Poet with a lot of experience in the Western genre. Though she was an accomplished poet, she had a hankerin' to play music... so she found two local musicians and away they went! Their only album together, "Hittin' the Trail" was recorded live in the hallway at KOZI radio, engineered by Michael Dicks, a station DJ, late one evening. The fun on this album is unmistakeable and began a long stretch of cowgirl fun.
Emele and Lauralee played as a duo for a few years after Virginia left the Valley until Nadine Van Hees, a local musician, decided to join in. Nadine learned to play the mandolin by applying her violin knowledge and developed some of the most clever licks ever heard! The glad played and rode together for three years. They produced two great albums, "Cowboy Rhythm" (2005) and "Western Moon" (2007). The girls traveled around the west and wore out a lot of pairs of boots looking for gigs. They most fun was probably had in Canada, where they like to hear western music and western swing.
When Nadine decided it was time to get off the cowboy trail, Lauralee and Emele didn't figure they would ever find anyone in Winthrop (population 300) who would be interested in making cowboy music... and then along came Jennifer Epps. With a great voice, wonderful harmonic sense, and harmony licks that developed almost daily, the girls hit the jackpot! Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band hit the trail almost full time. Creating two wonderful albums, "Daughters of the West" (2008) and "My Horse Knows the Way Home" (2011).
